Certification for Psychometrists

Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Updated (11/11/08)

Every two years all CSPs must obtain a minimum of 12 hours of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in ethics and psychometry or a psychological, neuropsychological, neurological or mental health related field.  At least 2 of these CEUs must be in ethics.  Click here to access the CSP renewal form.

CEUs accredited and/or sponsored by the following associations are automatically eligible:

• Board of Certified Psychometrists (BCP)
• National Association of Psychometrists (NAP)
• American Psychological Association (APA) [only APA accredits courses]
• National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN)
• International Neuropsychological Society (INS)
• National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC)
• American Association of Clinical Neuropsychology (AACN)
• American Medical Association (AMA)
Human Subject’s Protection Programs* (limit 4 CEU credits) - see listing below

If materials relevant to the completion of your CEU requirement are post-marked and/or received after the December 31st deadline your CSP designation will be temporarily suspended. You will be notified of the suspension and given 30 days to submit a written appeal to the Appeals Committee. Once this written appeal has been received, the Appeals Committee will respond via email with its decision. The decision of the Appeals Committee is final and ends the appeals process.

CSPs who do not meet the CEU requirement, including failure to pay the biennial renewal fee, will have their certification revoked. CSPs whose certification has lapsed and who wish to re-certify will be required to submit an application, pay the current application fee(s), and re-take the certification examination.

Is a CEU Approved?

If you are uncertain as to whether or not a CEU opportunity meets the eligibility requirements indicated above you may request pre-approval from the BCP by submitting the CEU Pre-Approval Inquiry Form with a $10 payment made payable to the “Board of Certified Psychometrists – BCP.” Once payment has been received, your request will be processed and email notification will follow within 14 business days.

* - The Human Subject’s Protection Programs can be used to fulfill the ethics requirement for CSP CEUs.  The listed programs, as well as other IRB certification programs completed through a CSP’s institution may also be acceptable - please use the CEU Pre-Approval Inquiry Form if uncertain.

These certification programs deal directly with ethical issues and are widely recognized and endorsed by nearly all major governmental and educational institutions. Although most of these programs require some type of registration, there is usually no fee for their use.  In addition, the CSP need not be affiliated with any particular institution to complete these programs.  Most importantly, the on-line format of these programs would allow for CSP’s to obtain their 2 units of ethics. For example, NCI offers the course "Human Participant Protections Education for Research" without charge and the curriculum satisfies the NIH human subjects training requirement for obtaining Federal Funds as well as the CSP CEU requirement.

All of these programs generate a certificate of completion or will email you similar information, which allows the you (the CSP) to obtain a hard copy in order to verify successful completion. It should be noted that many of these programs vary in the length of time that they take to complete. As such, it is possible that a program may be able to provide more than one ethics CEU.

Potential CME On-line courses:

U of Washington: Online CMEs (some are free)

Some University IRB programs require that the registrant be affiliated with the university and are not listed here due to their restricted access - even though many offer much the same courses as the ones above.
